Description:
Antique Holy Sepulchre globe in rich cobalt-blue glass, dating from the 18th/19th century. The rounded, optic-blown body features subtle ribbing that creates beautiful effects of light and colour. A short neck with an applied glass trail completes the fine handcrafted design. Extremely rare in this cobalt-blue colour. Each piece is unique, with its own individual character resulting from its handmade production. Such globes were used at Easter to decorate representations of the Holy Sepulchre in churches. Filled with water and illuminated by small lights placed behind them, they produced an atmospheric coloured glow. In the otherwise dark church, this illumination lent the Holy Sepulchre a particularly solemn atmosphere. A collectable, museum-quality example of historic glassmaking and religious tradition.
